Student photos capture beauty of Arizona | News
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Photography contest highlights Arizona and student photographers, with the winning photos coming from Southern Arizona.
This is the 14th year for the Arizona School Boards Association Jack Peterson Student Photography Contest. It is open to students from kindergarten to 12th grade at any of Arizona's public school districts. Photos were judged in two categories – grades K – 8 with one award given, and grades 9 – 12 with three awards given.
Winner of the K – 8 category was Alexis Martinez, an eighth grader from Patagonia Middle School, for ‘Play Set at Sunset' photo.
Winners in the 9 – 12 category were: first place, Julio Morales, a junior at Amphitheater High School for ‘Tucson, AZ'; second place, Haley Davis, a senior at Red Rock High School for ‘Antelope Canyon'; and third place, Lindis Barry, a sophomore at Pinnacle High School for ‘Dragon Fly'.
Judges for the contest included Arizona Highways photo editor Jeff Kida, as well as current and former school board members who had ties to photography and the arts. The ASBA student photography contest started in 1999 as a tribute to a former ASBA executive director and amateur photographer, Jack Peterson, after he retired.
